Army Head Coach Joe Heskett Inducted into the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame

Army head coach Joe Heskett was one of five inductees into the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame over the weekend, joining Dale Brand, Kirk Myers, Troy Steiner and Terry Steiner.

The Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame began in 2002 and recognizes individuals who “have impacted the sport of wrestling on a national level, as well as in the state of Iowa”.

Heskett, a graduate of Iowa State University, was a four-time All-American and three-time finalist, who won an NCAA title in his senior campaign.

In a February article on goarmysports.com, Heskett said the following about his selection:

“First and foremost, I would like to thank the selection committee, as well as the Dan Gable Museum and Glen Brand Hall of Fame. I would also like to congratulate my fellow inductees. As I reflect upon my career, I am so grateful for the sport of wrestling and its role in developing my character and mentality. Being recognized in my sport at the highest level is an absolute honor. This humbling honor is an extension of the love and support that I have received throughout my life. This induction directly correlates to the love and sacrifice of the woman who raised, supported and mentored me, my grandmother, Evelyn.

“I am blessed beyond belief, and this induction is shared with all my coaches, specifically Bobby Douglas and my high school coach Bill Barger. This honor is also shared with my family, close friends, the Iowa State community, the Cal Poly and Ohio State communities and the community here at West Point. In closing, this honor is shared with my three gold medals Olivia, Ava and Joey.”

Heskett coached at Cal Poly and Ohio State before becoming the head coach at West Point.

New York Earns Two Victories at Freestyle Schoolboy National Duals on Saturday

Team New York split a pair of duals on Saturday at the 2013 Schoolboy National Freestyle Duals in Indianapolis to take fifth in pool action. The squad registered wins against Georgia (58-17) and Arizona (38-33) while falling to Indiana and Washington.

Syosset’s Vito Arujau went 3-1 on the day at 112 pounds, outscoring his opponents 31-0 in his victories.  Also collecting three wins for the Empire State was Larry Baker at 265. Jacori Teemer (98), Charlie Spada (120) and Dylan Dubuque (190) won their only two bouts of the day, while Dan Knapp (175), Hunter Richard (128), Eric Bartrick (136) and David Wingate (210) all also notched a pair of victories.

Competition resumes on Sunday, with New York wrestling in the Red/Blue bracket versus Colorado.

Team New York Completes Greco Competition at Schoolboy National Duals

Team New York brought over 20 wrestlers to Indianapolis for the 2013 Schoolboy Duals and finished in sixth place in the Red/Blue pool after tallying a 2-6 record over the two-day Greco Roman action.

The Freestyle tournament will begin on Saturday and continue through to Sunday.

A number of grapplers collected five or more victories during the event for the Empire State group. Although the team mostly forfeited at 190, the upperweights got their hands raised quite a bit, with Dylan Dubuque (175), recording a 6-1 mark and David Wingate (210) going 7-1 and Larry Baker (265) coming in at 6-2. In addition, Hunter Richard, who was a Section 3 champion as an eighth grader for Holland Patent last season, was strong at 128 pounds, earning a 5-1 record with two pins and two technical falls. 128 was a solid weight throughout, as Tyrese Byron won his two appearances in that class as well as his other bout at 136 to go 3-0 with two pins and a technical fall.

Also going undefeated was Charlie Spada, who won both of his bouts, via fall and tech, at 120. Registering four wins were Noah Grover (144) and Trent Svingala (84).

On Day 1 of the tournament in Indiana, Team New York began Pool C action with a loss to Ohio before controlling a 54-20 triumph over Oklahoma Blue. After the squad forfeited the opening weights of 70 and 77 (which happened in all duals) to fall behind the Sooners 10-0, Trent Svingala got things on track with an 8-0 victory at 84 pounds. Trey LaFlamme and Jacori Teemer followed up with a pair of falls to put the squad ahead for good. Between 120 and 175 pounds, the Empire Staters captured seven consecutive bouts, with Hunter Dusold, Hunter Richard, Eric Bartnick, Noah Grover, Vito Smolyak, Dan Knapp and Dylan Dubuque all victorious.

After falling against Texas Blue in the next contest, New York was edged 40-39 by Virginia to move into the Red/Blue division for Day 2.

On Friday morning, Michigan prevailed 42-33 over New York in the opening dual of the day, but the Empire Staters responded to top Maryland 37-31. Matt Maquet picked up the first win of the meet for New York at 105 by a 7-0 score and then the team picked up steam, capturing four in a row, beginning with Charlie Spada at 120. In the ensuing match against Missouri, a 56-18 setback, Hunter Richard (128) and Tyrese Byron (136) provided bright spots with falls. The squad finished against Florida, notching six victories.

Hofstra's Steve Bonanno Earns First Team Academic All-American Honors

Hofstra’s Steve Bonanno has received a number of honors during his career with the Pride. On Thursday, he added to that list when he was named to the Academic All-American First Team. (The squad is named by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA and is for “at large” sports such as fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling). Bonanno was one of three wrestlers included, along with Penn State’s Matt Brown and Nebraska’s Josh Ihnen.

Bonanno, was also an Academic All-American in 2012, when he earned second team accolades. During that season, he made the podium at the NCAAs, taking eighth at 125 pounds. The Wantagh native was the CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year as a junior and senior and is currently a graduate student working toward his MBA.

World Wrestling Month Comes to an End With "Battle at the Falls" in Canada

World Wrestling Month is about to come to an end, but not before one last celebration of the sport in Niagara Falls, Canada on Friday.

The “Battle at the Falls”, featuring some of the best women’s grapplers in the world, took place with the United States, Canada and Ukraine facing off in dual meets.

The host nation went 2-0, while the USA split its two duals, defeating the Ukraine.  Two members of the Fredonia wrestling community represented the Red, White and Blue. Former Hillbillies star Carlene Sluberski competed at 48 kg while coach Alex Conti was part of the Team USA staff.

Memorial Day: Remembering Navy SEAL and Former Wrestler Jonathan Kaloust

On Memorial Day, we remember many members of the United States Armed Forces, including Massapequa and Binghamton wrestler Jonathan Kaloust. For more on Kaloust, see the release below courtesy of Bubearcats.com.

VESTAL, N.Y.—Former Binghamton wrestler and 2010 graduate Jonathan Kaloust was killed [earlier this month] in a Navy training exercise at Fort Knox in Kentucky.

Kaloust, 23, of Massapequa, was a Navy SEAL and Special Warfare Operator Third Class who was based at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek in Fort Story, Va.

He is survived by his parents, Gary and Irene Kaloust, and a sister, Melanie.

Kaloust wrestled at the University from 2007-10 before earning his degree in political science. He was an all-star scholastic athlete at Massapequa High on Long Island and won 10 career matches as a walk-on at Binghamton. He was a dedicated team member and valuable training partner in the practice room.

He joined the Navy in March 2011.

Kaloust’s high school wrestling coach, Al Bevilacqua, told LongIsland.com that Kaloust “was a born leader, he was always someone others wanted to be like. Jon’s just one of the exceptional kids.”

Long Island's X-Cel Advances to the Semifinals at Pop & Flo National Duals on Saturday

X-Cel won the title at the Pop & Flo National Duals last year.  The Long Island group will try to repeat that feat on Sunday after advancing to the semifinals on the first day of competition.

The squad looked completely dominant early, opening with a 84-0 blanking of Kryptonite Wrestling Club, followed by a 71-6 triumph over Journeymen Gold.  The quarterfinals brought a tougher challenge, however, as X-Cel squared off with Dark Knights of Pennsylvania.

Two-time state champion Nick Piccininni got the New Yorkers off to a good start with a major decision at 120 pounds.  However, the opponents from the Keystone State responded with three consecutive victories from 125 to 135 to take a 12-4 advantage.

The two teams then traded wins over the next several matches, beginning with a pin by Sacred Heart-bound TJ Fabian of Shoreham Wading River at 140.  The Dark Knights were victorious at 145 and 160, while state champion Louis Hernandez of Mepham earned a 5-4 win at 152 and Steven Schneider got his hand raised at 170 with an overtime triumph.  After regulation ended deadlocked at 1, and there was no scoring in sudden victory, Schneider rode his opponent out for the entire 30 seconds and then escaped when it was his turn on bottom to make the team score 19-16 in favor of the Pennsylvania squad.

After the Dark Knights extended their advantage to 22-16 with a decision at 182, Chris Chambers put four big points on the board for X-Cel with a major at 195, followed by a 9-3 decision by Steven Mills at 220 to put the Long Island group ahead for the first time since early in the dual.  When a forfeit at heavyweight was tacked on, X-Cel took a 29-22 lead as the meet returned to the lightweights.

At 106, the Dark Knights made things interesting, earning a fall to make it 29-28 in favor of X-Cel with just one match remaining.  In that contest, former Wantagh star Jose Rodriguez took control with an early takedown and got his hand raised to push X-Cel to the 32-28 win and to the semifinals on Sunday against Iron Horse (New Jersey).

The 32-team High School field included many squads from New York, including teams from Ascend, Cellar Dwellers, Cobra, Finger Lakes Wrestling Club, Iowa Style, Journeymen, Port Jervis, Razor and 631 Elite.

Meanwhile, close to half of the squads in the Youth field came from New York as well.

In addition to Sunday’s action to determine placement in the team standings, there will be some great bouts on Saturday night.  At 8:30 p.m., some of the top individuals will take the mat for an All-Star dual.

Hofstra's Steve Bonanno Receives Another Scholar-Athlete Honor

Hofstra wrestler Steve Bonanno has been voted to the 2013 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)-Capital One Academic All-District 1 Men’s At-Large first team, CoSIDA announced Thursday afternoon.

Bonanno (Wantagh, NY), a 2012 CoSIDA-Capital One Men’s At-Large Academic All-American second team selection in 2012, will now advance to the men’s at-large national ballot along with the first team honorees from the seven other districts. The 2013 CoSIDA-Capital One Academic All-America Division I Men’s At-Large Team, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected, will be announced on Thursday, June 6.

Nine New York Wrestlers Win Championships at MAWA Eastern Nationals While Numerous Others Place

While many New Yorkers wrestled at the Northeast Regionals in Freestyle and Greco over the weekend, a large group traveled South to Maryland to compete for folkstyle titles at the MAWA Eastern Nationals.

The Empire State grapplers brought a lot of hardware back home, with 17 wrestlers making the finals, including nine champions. Many familiar faces captured gold, including 2012 or 2013 All-Staters such as Port Jefferson’s Matteo DeVincenzo, Mexico’s Theo Powers, Walt Whitman’s Joe Calderone, Johnson City’s Reggie Williams and Unatego’s Kevin Thayer and Ryan Marszal. In addition, at the Midget level, Norwich’s Troy Spratley won it all at 62 pounds, while Nassau County lightweight Peter Pappas did the same at 105 pounds in the Intermediate competition. Meanwhile, Johnny Miller of Shirley took the crown in the Open division at 142 pounds.

A number of other wrestlers who stood on the podium in Albany this year earned silver, including Norwich’s Tristan Rifanburg, Stony Point’s Matt Caputo and Johnson City’s Zach Colgan. Joining them in the runner up position were Nolan McGregor of Hornell and Braiden Woodward of Canisteo in the Bantam class, Connor Hamilton of Forestport in Intermediate action and Elite competitors Richie Burke of Ithaca and Conner Halladay of Chenango Forks.
