Honis, Dutton, Vines and Tangora Move On in Cadet Freestyle on Day 5 at Fargo

On Wednesday, the fifth day of competition at Fargo, the Men’s Cadet Freestyle tournament began and four New York wrestlers remained in medal contention after the first day of action.

  • At 138 pounds, Rocky Point’s Thomas Dutton went 4-1 with three pins to advance.  He will face Miguel Barreras of New Mexico, who also went 4-1, in his first bout on Thursday.
  • At 145 pounds, Nick Vines of Wantagh won three of his four matches and will take on Weston Dobler of North Dakota in the next round.
  • At 182 pounds, Jamesville-Dewitt’s Benjamin Honis won all three of his bouts and will have a bye in Round 4 on Thursday.  Honis earned All-America honors in the Cadet Greco event earlier in the week.
  • At 195 pounds, Bethlehem Central rising sophomore Chris Tangora went 2-1 and will next take the mat against Montana grappler Matthew Welch, also 2-1.

The Empire State women’s team provided a number of highlights throughout the week, including three National Champions – Mary Westman (159 pounds, Junior Freestyle) and Alexis Porter (in both the Cadet and Junior divisions). In addition, the squad boasted five additional All-Americans.   On Wednesday, the team placed eighth in the Women’s Freestyle Duals.

NY Wrestlers Clinch Spots on the Podium During Day 1 of Cadet Greco Nationals

After watching his sister Alexis win a National Championship on Saturday, Jesse Porter went undefeated as well during the first day of Cadet Greco Roman action at Fargo, North Dakota.  Porter was 5-0 at 132 pounds, as was fellow New Yorker Sam Ward of St. Anthony’s.  Both Porter and Ward have clinched spots on the podium and will face each other in the next round on Monday.

Two other New York wrestlers are guaranteed All-America honors. Chris Cuccolo, who took fifth in this event in 2011, notched four victories and will place no lower than sixth at 94 pounds.  Meanwhile, Benjamin Honis of Jamesville-Dewitt will wrestle for seventh place against Wyatt Richardson of Minnesota at 182 pounds tomorrow.

Eden’s Alexander Smythe tallied a 4-1 record on the day at 152 pounds and will take on Ricky Regas of Texas in his next bout.

Alexis Porter Wins National Title at 143 Pounds on Opening Day at Fargo

Alexis Porter of Ballston Lake made sure New York didn’t have to wait long to capture a National Title at Fargo, winning the 143-pound championship in the first day of competition in the Women’s Cadet division.

The Shenendehowa grappler made quick work of her finals opponent, Anna Naylor of California, earning a first period fall after building up a large lead.  Porter opened the scoring with an early takedown and followed with a three-point throw for a 4-0 advantage.  Shortly afterwards, Porter picked up the pin after another big throw.

It was an impressive ending to a dominant day for Porter, who was a double medalist in Fargo in 2011. The Section 2 wrestler was in control all day, defeating her first foe, Washington’s Vanessa Dixon by technical fall before pinning Alyssa Hernandez of California.  She then topped Marlie Gillis of Wisconsin in straight periods to garner her spot in the finals.

Porter wasn’t the only Empire State placewinner at 143 pounds.  Kennedie Eddings, a returning medalist, once again made the podium, taking sixth at that weight.

Also making the medal stand for New York was Yuneris Diaz, who was third in round robin action at 172 pounds.

Friday Night Lights Coming to Massapequa and Fulton This Weekend

Action at the Freestyle and Greco Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota begins on Saturday with the Women’s Cadet tournament. But plenty of wrestling will take place much closer to home in the Empire State this weekend, from Long Island to Fulton to Rochester.

On July 13, a pair of Takedown Tournaments will take place different parts of the state.   Friends of Massapequa Wrestling will host “Friday Night Lights” in John Burns Park beginning at 5 p.m..  The event will continue for several hours, featuring competition in seven divisions, from Intermediate to Masters.  Up to 400 grapplers have taken the mat at this event in the past.

The success of this event on Long Island in recent years caught the eye of some in the upstate area and resulted in the first “Friday Night Lights” event held by the Friends of Section 3 Wrestling in 2011.  The second edition will also be held on July 13, at Fulton High School’s Athletic Complex, starting at 6 p.m.

“We saw the event in Massapequa and thought it would be a perfect fit up here as well,” said John Drew, one of the organizers. “Vito Mundo, who runs it down there in Long Island was very supportive and instrumental in getting us off the ground.”

In last year’s inaugural event, Drew said 327 wrestlers participated, from five different states.  This year, a group from Canada will add an international component.  According to Drew, pre-registration is well ahead of where it was in 2011 and he expects to reach 400 grapplers, which is the maximum that can be accommodated.

“We had a bracket with four state placers in it last year, so it’s not all just for fun – we definitely have kids who really want to come out and win it,” Drew said.  “But overall, we like to call it a wrestling festival rather than a wrestling tournament, with vendors, concessions and sprinklers for the kids.  It’s a family-friendly atmosphere and a fun night for everyone.”

For those who prefer wrestling on the sand, Ontario Beach Park in Rochester will be the place to be on July 14-15.  On Saturday, the US Beach National Championships will occur in six divisions and on Sunday the Senior Beach World Team Trials will take place, with the winners advancing to the World Beach championships in September.  In addition, Sunday’s action will include the National High School Beach Duals.

Finocchiaro, Ervin Win Titles; Nine Additional NYers Make Podium at Canada Cup Pre-Junior Tournament

The Empire State boasted a pair of champions, Frank Perrelli and Duke Pickett, on Saturday at the Canada Cup Senior freestyle competition.  On Sunday, in the Pre-Junior freestyle tournament in Ontario, New York was once again well represented on the podium.

A pair of New Yorkers, Brown University-bound Anthony Finocchiaro of Canastota (63 kg) and Vernon-Verona-Sherrill’s Brian Ervin (130 kg) captured titles while another nine grapplers from the Empire State placed in the top six at their respective weights.

Team New York Earns 6-2 Record at Greco Junior National Duals

Team New York went 6-2 overall on Wednesday and Thursday at the Greco Roman Junior National Duals in Oklahoma City to capture third place in the Bronze/Copper pool.

Columbia-bound Connor Sutton led the way with a perfect 8-0 record at 160 and 170 pounds while two other wrestlers, Uniondale’s Dante Salkey (5-0) and Cheektowaga’s Renaldo Rodriguez-Spencer (4-0) were also unbeaten in the competition.  Also picking up at least five victories for the Empire State were Santo Curatolo (7-1), Jessy Williams (6-2), Matt Greene (5-2) and Sutton’s future Ivy League teammate Chris Loew (5-2) of Wantagh.

The squad compiled 3-1 records on both days of the competition.  On Wednesday, the New Yorkers scored convincing wins over South Dakota (55-14), Utah (32-16) and North Dakota (37-23) and a one-point setback to Oklahoma Red (32-31), which led to a third place finish in Pool B.  That performance put the Empire State team into the Bronze/Copper Pool for Thursday’s action.

The team got off to another strong start on Day 2, with a 39-20 triumph over Missouri before falling against California.  However, the group rebounded to win a three-point dual with Texas before defeating North Dakota for the second time at the event, this time for third place in the Bronze/Copper bracket.

The Empire State squad will return to the mat on Friday as the Freestyle tournament begins.

Clemente and Merkin Earn All-America Honors at Kids Nationals in Utah

Only two New York wrestlers made the trip to Orem, Utah for the Kids Freestyle and Greco Roman Nationals this week, but the pair made a big impact in the Schoolboy competition, with Joseph Clemente finishing in the top four in both styles at 136 pounds while Leonard Merkin grabbed seventh in Greco action before coming within one victory of placing in Freestyle in the 128-pound bracket.

The event began with Greco on Tuesday and both Empire State wrestlers ended the day on the podium.

At 136 pounds, Clemente took fourth, notching a pair of pins along the way.  The LaSalle wrestler opened with a fall over Trey Waltz of Arizona in less than a minute before dropping his next bout to eventual champion Ashton Seely of Utah.  Clemente followed with his second pin over Haydn Maley, before falling in the third place tilt against Hayden Bates of Oregon.

On the same day, Merkin compiled a 4-2 record in Greco on the path to seventh at 128 pounds.  Bronze medalist Nicholas Vestal of Florida defeated Merkin in Round 1, but the Brooklyn grappler responded with three consecutive victories, including falls against California’s Sergio Leal and Michael Peters of Illinois.  After New Mexico’s Clayton Arellano downed Merkin in the consolations, the outstanding New York City middle school wrestler finished his day on a high note with a pin of Ricardo Gonzalez of the Golden State for seventh.

On Wednesday in Freestyle, Merkin once again faced a tough first round task, this time squaring off with eventual finalist Owen Webster in a three-period affair won by the Minnesota grappler.  Merkin rebounded after the setback, racking up two dominant wins over New Jersey’s Michael Ilic and California’s Ronnie Guerrero before dropping his final match to Idaho’s James Fisher in the “Round of 12”.

Meanwhile, Clemente opened with two bonus point victories before dropping his semifinal match.  He battled back, however, notching a first period pin over New Mexico’s Kyle Snelling and a 5-0, 7-0 technical fall over Wisconsin’s Jordan Meyer to capture third.

Iowa Dual Highlights 2012-13 Buffalo Schedule

BUFFALO, NY – The Buffalo Bulls wrestling team announced its 2012-13 schedule, with another season highlighted by aggressive scheduling against some of the top talent in the nation. This season, the Bulls will bring perennial powerhouse Iowa to Alumni Arena for its fourth annual Takedown Cancer event on Dec. 17. Additionally, the Bulls will be hosting the 2013 Mid-American Conference championships on March 10.

The Hawkeyes finished third in the 2012 NCAA national championships and had six All-Americans and one national champion. This will be the first meeting ever between the two teams, and it is the first of two scheduled duals between the two programs, as Buffalo will face Iowa on the road in the 2013-14 season.

“Having Iowa come here – and us going to Iowa next year – is a huge step in the right direction for our program,” said head coach Jim Beichner. “It’s something that’s hopefully not just exciting for our team, but for Western New York and all of our alumni and friends of the progam.”

Before that, the season will kick off on Nov. 4 with the UB Invite, marking a slight change in format to the standard season-opening tournament. While in the past it was an open tournament, this season, the UB Invite will offer team scoring in a competition that will feature the region’s top teams and wrestlers. Unattached wrestlers will also compete, but this season, each team will field a group of starters to compete to win a team championship.

Following the UB Invite, the Bulls will again travel to Brockport, NY for the Oklahoma Gold Classic (Nov. 10). Then another significant change will be in store for the team, as the New York State Collegiate championship will be next up on Nov. 17. Usually held in the last part of the season, the championship will move up into November to offer a more fiercely competitive and exciting event. Hosted by Cornell, the tournament will bring together the very best college teams in New York.
In the final of the four straight tournaments to open the season, the Bulls will go to Penn State for the Nittany Lion Open. Hosted by the two-time defending national champions, the tournament will again offer the team a challenging tournament chock full of premiere national talent.
Following that, the team embarks on a streak of six duals and two tournaments in just over a month, starting with its MAC opener at Central Michigan on Dec. 9 that has tremendous historical impact for UB. That dual will be the 1,000th dual in program history, and the 276th in the career of head coach Jim Beichner. That is followed up one week later with the team’s home opener against Iowa.

The team will then hit the road again for three straight road events, starting Dec. 18 at Bloomsburg. Then, the Bulls will split up the squad for a pair of tournaments to close out 2012. On Dec. 29, the team will send a select few wrestlers to the Midlands tournament at Northwestern University. Widely regarded as the most prestigious in-season tournament in the country, the Midlands will celebrate its 50th year in 2012. Last season, John-Martin Cannon earned Buffalo’s highest individual finish after placing fourth. UB wrestlers who are not competing at the Midlands will participate in the Lock Haven Invite on the same day.

Buffalo opens the new year at Binghamton on Jan. 2 before coming home on Jan. 6 to take on Edinboro. The following Friday, the team will head down to the mid-Atlantic region for the Virginia Duals. This will be the third season in the duals tournament, and after placing in the past two season, the Bulls will strive for a team title against numerous national powerhouses.

A quartet of MAC duals soon follows, with UB hosting Eastern Michigan (Jan. 18), Kent State (Feb. 3), and Northern Illinois (Feb. 16), and battling Ohio on the road (Jan. 26).

Another new event for the team will be held on Feb. 23, with the Regional Duals hosted by Franklin and Marshall in Lancaster, PA. Featuring Lock Haven, Purdue, Duke, Rider, and the host Diplomats of F&M, the duals event will feature at least two dual matches for the Bulls to close out the regular season.

The Bulls will then host the MAC tournament championship for the first time since 2007, with head coach Jim Beichner excited to show just how much the young UB squad has grown from last season.

Following that, the team hopes to send another handful of wrestlers to the NCAA Championships, hosted this season in Des Moines, Iowa at the Wells Fargo Arena.

“We made a commitment years ago that our schedule would get better and tougher every year,” Beichner said. “When you do that, you take more risks, but we hope the rewards come with these risks. Unless you make a schedule where you wrestle the best, you won’t ever get to the level of the very best.”

College Wrestling Coming to Madison Square Garden for the First Time in December

NEW YORK — MSG Sports announced today that, for the first time in Madison Square Garden history, collegiate wrestling will take to the mat in the inaugural “Grapple at the Garden, benefiting Beat the Streets.” Bucknell, Chattanooga, Hofstra, Iowa, Maryland, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Ohio State and Rutgers will participate in the historic event on Sunday, Dec. 16, at The World’s Most Famous Arena.

Nine of the country’s top college wrestling programs will converge at Madison Square Garden for what will be the first-ever collegiate wrestling dual meet in The Garden’s illustrious history. Five of the participating institutions placed in the top 25 during the NCAA Division I Championships. They include Iowa with a third place finish, Ohio State with a fifth place finish and Oklahoma State, which finished in sixth place. Also included are Nebraska and Hofstra, which finished 21st and 23rd respectively.

Oklahoma State and Iowa are by far two of the greatest dynasties in all of college athletics and, together, have a combined total of 57 NCAA wrestling championships. This includes 34 championships for Oklahoma State, which marks a record for the most titles held by one university in any college sport in the country.

“Madison Square Garden has a long and legendary history with collegiate athletics and we look forward to welcoming the finest collegiate wrestlers in the country on December 16,” said Joel Fisher, executive vice president, MSG Sports. “There’s no better way to host our first-ever collegiate wrestling meet than with these nine top universities with first-rate wrestling programs.”

The “Grapple at the Garden, benefiting Beat the Streets” will showcase the many talents of college’s top wrestlers including Iowa’s two-time NCAA champion Matt McDonough, who recently captured the 125 lb. championship at both the Big Ten and NCAA Championships this season as well as Ohio State’s Logan Stieber, who in his first season captured the 133 lb. title at the NCAA Championships, defeating No. 1 seed and defending national champion Jordan Oliver from Oklahoma State.

Long Island native and 2011 ACC Coach of the Year, Kerry McCoy will lead his Maryland Terrapins into the Garden when they take on Nebraska and Ohio State. McCoy, a two-time Olympian, four-time World Cup Champion and three-time NCAA All-American, captured the silver medal in the 2003 World Wrestling Championships at Madison Square Garden.

Additionally, prior to rebuilding The Ohio State University wrestling program, head coach Tom Ryan spent 11 years as head coach at Hofstra. Ryan, who grew up on Long Island, and his Buckeyes team will now face off against his former school during session one on December 16th.

The full day of wrestling on December 16 will consist of two separate sessions with the first starting at 10:30 a.m. with Rutgers vs. Chattanooga, Maryland vs. Nebraska, Ohio State vs. Hofstra and Iowa vs. Bucknell. Session two will begin at 12:30 p.m. and feature Rutgers vs. Nebraska, Oklahoma State vs. UTC, Ohio State vs. Maryland and Iowa vs. Hofstra.

Cadet and University Nationals – Results for New York Wrestlers

After redshirt seasons, a pair of two-time NCAA qualifiers, Ian Paddock of Ohio State and John-Martin Cannon of Buffalo returned to the mat this weekend and took sixth at the University Nationals Freestyle event in Akron, Ohio.

Cannon, the former Brockport High School standout, made the podium at 79 kg while Warsaw’s Paddock competed at 66 kg in his return from injury.

A third Empire State grappler, David White (55 kg), took sixth while representing Binghamton.  White transferred to the CAA institution after beginning his college career at Army.

The highest placer from New York in the University freestyle tournament was Pittsford’s Kyle Borshoff, currently an assistant coach at his alma mater, American University.  Borshoff earned bronze at 70 kg, losing only to eventual champion Ian Miller of Kent State in three periods.

The remaining medalists from the Empire State were Edinboro’s Ernest James (5th at 120 kg), a pair of 7th place finishers in Cornell’s Chris Villalonga (66 kg) and Columbia’s Jake O’Hara (70) and Kyle Frey (8th at 120 kg), who represented the Finger Lakes Wrestling Club.

In the FILA Cadet competition, Christopher Cuccolo, who is in his sophomore year at Pine Bush High School, earned two medals in the Buckeye State.  He was third in the Greco action on Friday in the 39-42 kg bracket and later in the weekend was the runner up in Freestyle.
